Investor reporting, done properly

What LPs expect each quarter and year, the templates they increasingly require, and how to cut the time it takes.

What is investor reporting in private funds?

Investor reporting is the set of documents a fund delivers to its limited partners: quarterly capital account statements, a quarterly report with financials and portfolio commentary, fee and expense disclosure (often in ILPA format), audited annual financial statements, and tax documents such as K-1s.

The quarterly package

A capital account statement per investor; fund financial statements; a portfolio update with valuations and key metrics; performance (IRR, TVPI, DPI) at fund and often investor level; and fee, expense and carry disclosure. Most LPAs require delivery within 45 to 90 days of quarter end.

The annual package

Audited financial statements, an annual meeting presentation, and tax documents on the tax calendar. Institutional LPs increasingly add ESG data requests and DDQ updates.

Why it takes so long

Reporting itself isn't slow; reconciliation is. When accounting, portfolio data, performance and documents live in different systems, the quarter is spent making them agree. When the closed ledger is the reporting dataset, the pack assembles from it and the review focuses on what changed.

Delivering it

Portal and mobile delivery with read receipts has replaced email attachments for most institutional LPs, and a delivery log is useful evidence for auditors and regulators.

Questions
