In-house or outsourced fund administration?

Cost, control and LP perception — and the hybrid most firms end up with.

By SRM, Executive Director · Updated October 2026

Should a private fund outsource administration?

It depends on scale, complexity and LP expectations. Outsourcing brings independence and capacity; in-house brings control and speed. Many firms run a hybrid: an administrator maintains the books inside a platform the GP also uses, so both see the same data.

Outsourced

Independent books, which some institutional LPs prefer; capacity without hiring. Trade-offs: cost per fund, turnaround time, and data that sits in the administrator's systems.

In-house

Control, speed and direct access to data. Trade-offs: hiring, key-person risk, and LP perception for smaller managers.

Hybrid

The administrator works in the GP's platform. The GP keeps its data and portal; the LP gets independent oversight. FUN/D supports this with separate administrator roles and a full audit trail.
