Capital calls, done cleanly

Timing, notices, wire security and reconciliation — the practices that keep LPs happy and money safe.

By SRM, Executive Director · Updated October 2026

What are best practices for capital calls?

Give the notice period the LPA requires (often ten business days) and some slack; calculate pro-rata amounts from the ledger; deliver notices through a secure portal with acknowledgement; verify wire instructions out-of-band; reconcile receipts against expected amounts; and follow up on shortfalls quickly and in writing.

Plan the cadence

Fewer, predictable calls are easier for LPs than frequent small ones. A subscription line can smooth timing; disclose its use.

Protect the wire

Business email compromise targets capital calls. Never change wire instructions by email; publish them in the portal; confirm any change by phone to a known number.

Track acknowledgement and receipt

Know who has opened the notice, who has acknowledged it and who has paid — per investor, in real time.

Reconcile and follow up

Match receipts to expected amounts; flag shortfalls and overpayments; follow the LPA's default process if needed.

Questions
