Audit readiness for private funds

What auditors ask for, and how to have it ready before they ask.

By SRM, Executive Director · Updated October 2026

How do private funds prepare for an audit?

By closing the books cleanly, reconciling capital activity and cash, documenting valuations with methodology and approvals, preparing schedules of investments, fees and allocations, and — ideally — giving auditors read-only access to the ledger so they can trace balances themselves.

Before fieldwork

Lock the year; reconcile every bank account and investor capital account; confirm investment roll-forwards; make sure every valuation has its support attached.

During fieldwork

Direct ledger access saves the most time: auditors sample, trace and request support without waiting for exports.

After

Post audit adjustments, re-issue statements if needed, and record what took longest so next year's close fixes it.

Questions

Does FUN/D give auditors access?
